A framework for simultaneous topology and layup optimization of laminated composite structures

We consider formulation and implementation of an optimization problem for simultaneous topology and layup design of composite structures. The topology is described by a relative density field which is mapped to a (almost) discrete thickness of each layer using filters; an in-plane filter controls the thickness variation and an out-of-plane filter together with SIMP-penalization drives the thickness in each layer towards zero or full thickness. The proposed problem formulation is implemented with Matlab for controlling the overall optimization process, and Nastran for finite element analysis, computation of design responses and design gradients. Numerical examples demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed formulation, its ability to produce discrete solutions, and advantages of the Nastran-based implementation.
